Blockade 3D is a multiplayer FPS that features deathmatches and horde modes.

Blockade 3D is an interesting game. Ever wonder what it would look like if Minecraft and Call of Duty had a baby? Well, it seems like that’s what the developers set out to answer. Think of it as a combat-heavy Minecraft. If you’re familiar with Minecraft, the aesthetic will be immediately familiar. If you’re familiar with CoD and other modern FPS games, the format will be quite familiar as well.

One thing that Blockade 3D does particularly well is game diversity. If there’s been a popular FPS mode in the last decade, you’ll find here in this game. You can face off in team-based or free-for-all deathmatches. You can band together against endless waves of zombies. You can capture the flag, defend the hardpoint and even take part in massive tank battles a la World of Tanks.

Maps can support up to 32 players and up to four teams at a time. The game also features a huge selection of weapons, vehicles and map elements. In addition, the game fully supports modding, so that object collection is constantly growing. Maps are procedurally generated by default. You can also design your own maps or play maps that have been created by the community. The game even features persistent rankings and levels so that you can track your progress.

Blockade avoids being too same-y with other FPS games by including so many modes. It doesn’t avoid that same problem with Minecraft. It feels perhaps too similar to that game a lot of the time. Another issue is that the controls are not nearly as responsive as they should be, and that really kills any chance — however minimal — of capturing the attention of the competitive scene.

Pros

  • A first-person shooter…
  • …in a Minecraft-like environment
  • Numerous game modes

Cons

  • Perhaps too derivative of Minecraft
  • Controls not as responsive as they should be
